Highland Games

Highland Games
Scotland's Highland games, with their centuries of history, are a major draw for tourists and locals alike. So successful are the games, that they are also staged in Scottish communities around the world, from Australia to Ontario. We take a look at the origins of the games, the histories of some of the oldest events, and learn what's involved in staging a high-profile Highland Games nowadays
Scotland’s ancient bards and seanachies (storytellers) could recite and record the names of all of Scotland’s monarchs over the centuries. They told stories of clan histories and battles that are still well known today. Although there is mention of warriors of great strength and tales of mighty deeds, information dealing specifically with Scottish sport, games, piping and dancing is quite sparse. Accounts of Scottish activities and achievements were certainly committed to paper but certain monarchs made great efforts to destroy all things Scottish, including books. This is particularly evident around 1715 and 1745, when castles and stately homes were taken over to house soldiers. In spite of this, those who are prepared to search diligently will find numerous references mentioning different activities and competitions that together comprise the Highland games we now know and love.
